In sintesi

Wind slab avalanches sensitive to human trigger remain our main concern today and with winds shifting to the north they may be found on all aspects. Loose-dry avalanches will also be possible in steep and sheltered terrain.  Human-triggered avalanches remain possible today.  The avalanche hazard is MODERATE at all elevations. Evaluate snow and terrain carefully and identify features of concern.

Several natural wind slab avalanches were observed yesterday during the storm cycle. Wind slabs are still likely to be reactive to human triggers today and may range in size and sensitivity. Winds shifted to the north yesterday afternoon and are expected to continue in that direction today. You can expect to find fresh deposits on all aspects, particularly in the alpine where winds are expected to remain within transportable speeds. Be suspect of terrain features that encourage drifting such as the leeward sides of ridgelines, gully features, and cross-loaded depressions. Blowing snow, recent cornice growth, drifting, stiff hollow feeling upside-down snow, and textured, uneven snow surfaces are all signs of recent wind transport. Use these signs to identify and avoid slopes with recent wind deposits and remember that with a change in the wind direction, surface clues get more difficult to interpret. Slopes that are currently being stripped may still be harboring reactive wind slabs from yesterday.

Significant loose dry sloughing was observed yesterday and, in some areas, resulting avalanches were quite sizable. Storm instabilities are expected to stabilize relatively quickly, however, they may still be possible to find today. This will be particularly true on steep shaded, slopes in sheltered locations and in areas near the crest which received relatively more snow out of this recent storm. Convex rollovers and slopes over 35° in steepness are potential problem areas. When in doubt, avoid being on or underneath avalanche terrain and be cognizant of your exposure to terrain features that increase the consequences of avalanches. This includes road cuts, gully features, cliff bands, and mid-slope depressions.

Avalanche Discussion

Those of you who see MODERATE danger as the new LOW may be surprised today. While Natural wind slab activity is not likely today, Fresh deposits are still likely to be sensitive to human triggers, particularly in the alpine. Snow totals vary widely from one end of the range to the other with the bulk of our most recent precipitation being focused on the Mammoth area. Keep this in mind as you make your travel plans for the day. These areas that received more snow will also be the areas where avalanche hazard is elevated. It will also be important to keep in mind that our strong California sun may loosen recent wind deposits on more solar aspects, potentially increasing their sensitivity.
