Avalanche Activity

Wind slabs represent the main danger.

In some localities 5 to 10 cm of snow will fall today above approximately 1700 m. As a consequence of new snow and wind from northeasterly directions, rather small wind slabs will form. The old wind slabs of the last few days will be covered with new snow in some cases and therefore difficult to recognise. These can in some places be released, in particular by large loads. Wind-loaded slopes where hard layers are lying on a weakly bonded old snowpack are unfavourable.

Snowpack Structure

High altitudes and the high Alpine regions: Over a wide area new snow and wind slabs are lying on a hard crust. In particular in the vicinity of peaks snow depths vary greatly, depending on the infuence of the wind. Individual weak layers exist in the old snowpack in particular on shady slopes.
