Avalanche Activity
Forecast Snow Stability: Above 1000 metres the existing snowpack will freeze, consolidate and be stable. Below this level it will continue to slowly thaw and will also be generally stable. Some fresh deposits of windslab are expected on North to East aspects above 1000 metres. However, these are expected to be shallow, reasonable well bonded and should be generally avoidable. The avalanche hazard will be Low.
Snowpack Structure
Forecast Weather Influences: After a mild night the freezing level will drop and be around 1000 metres during the day. There will be a few showers which will fall as snow above 900 metres. Winds will be from the South-West. Observed Weather Influences: After a generally dry night and morning it was a damp afternoon with rain at all levels. Winds were from the South. The freezing level was around 1200 metres overnight rising above the summits during the day. ObservedSnowStability: The snowpack consolidated slightly in the dry conditions overnight. However, significant thawing resumed during the day. Some wet snow instabilities exist on steep North to East aspects above 1000 metres. In places significant cornices overhang these aspects, and these remain prone to collapse. The avalanche hazard is Moderate.
