Snow from last week's storm fell on weak surfaces from the January dry period. The chance for backcountry travelers to trigger dangerous avalanches to four feet in depth continues. Evaluate snow and terrain carefully to identify features of concern.

    The potential for destructive avalanches two to four feet in depth continues. Persistent hard slabs rest on weak January drought surfaces on a variety of aspects and could be triggered by backcountry travelers. These slabs are more likely to be released in steeper avalanche terrain below ridge tops, in or around cliff bands or steep chutes. A slope could be crossed multiple times before someone hits a trigger point. Periods of sunshine on slopes will increase the chance of releasing slides. At lower elevations the snowpack is thin and avalanches are unlikley but be alert to locally deeper or faceted snow around terrain features.

Avalanche Discussion

High pressure is to build in over the area on Thursday while southwest winds have averages of five to fifteen miles per hour. Temperatures are to rise into the low twenties.The general avalanche hazard is expected to be Moderate. The possibility continues to trigger persistent slabs, some deep, with depths up to four feet. These slabs have become less sensitive and are therefore even harder to predict than they were earlier in the week. Suspect areas include typical avalanche starting zones and rocky areas above 7500 that are very steep.
