You can trigger avalanches on northerly and east-facing slopes near and above treeline where you find more than about two feet of snow. In deeper or previously wind-drifted features where you might find up to three feet of snow, some of these avalanches can grow large enough to bury you. You can find safer riding at lower elevations, in wind-sheltered areas with less snow depth, and in areas that don't face northerly or east.
Locally in the Raggeds and Ruby Ranges, the snowpack is a little deeper. Here you might trigger a large avalanche lower than other parts of the Elk Mountains down to around 10,500 feet.
