Avalanche Discussion

( Discussion is generated from the previous day's afternoon forecast. )A storm system diving down the Canadian Rockies is expected to split as it moves into northwest Montana resulting in cloudy skies and a chance of light snow for Western Wyoming. Overnight lows in the mountains should dip into the single digits before rising into the low teens on Monday. Southwesterly to westerly ridgetop winds are forecasted to increase to 15 to 25 miles per hour. The general avalanche hazard is expected to remain MODERATE on Monday. Backcountry travelers could trigger soft, surface slabs up to two feet in steep, wind-loaded starting zones. Older, hard slabs two to four feet in depth also persist. More substantial triggers such as large groups, snowmobiles, or surface slides may be needed to initiate these hard slabs. If caught in one of these hard-slab avalanches, serious consequences will result.
