Pockets of soft surface slab up to 18 inches in depth exist at the upper elevations. Yesterday, skiers and a snowboarder triggered these slabs in the Spoon Couloir above Amphitheater Lake and on Pucker Face and in No Shadows Couloir on Cody Peak. These slabs will gain depth and volume as the day progresses. They lie on hard old snow surfaces and could be triggered by humans who venture into steep couloirs, hanging snowfields and cliff areas. Mostly stable snow exist at the mid and lower elevations.

The first in a series of shortwave troughs will bring periods of snowfall to the mountains overnight and into Sunday. Up to six inches of new snow are possible overnight with another four inches likely during the day. Winds will be west at 15 to 25 miles per hour. Temperatures will be in the teens and 20s.The general avalanche hazard is expected to increase overnight and during the day on Sunday. If significant new snow falls and is accompanied by high winds the general avalanche hazard could rise from MODERATE to CONSIDERABLE at the higher elevations and from LOW to MODERATE at the mid elevations. It is likely to remain LOW at the lower elevations. Soft surface slabs 12 to 24 inches deep and older denser slabs two to three feet deep could be human triggered in steep avalanche starting zones.
