Avalanche Activity

Wind slabs are to be evaluated with care and prudence.

In the last few days wind slabs formed at high altitudes and in high Alpine regions. The soft wind slabs of the weekend are prone to triggering above approximately 2000 m. Caution is to be exercised in particular adjacent to ridgelines and in gullies and bowls. In high Alpine regions the avalanche prone locations are more prevalent. In isolated cases avalanches are medium-sized and can be released even by a single winter sport participant. As a consequence of solar radiation dry loose snow avalanches are possible as the day progresses, but they will be mostly small. Apart from the danger of being buried, restraint should be exercised as well in view of the danger of avalanches sweeping people along and giving rise to falls. The Avalanche Warning Service currently has only a small amount of information that has been collected in the field, so that the avalanche danger should be investigated especially thoroughly in the relevant locality.

Snowpack Structure

10 to 40 cm of snow, and even more in some localities, has fallen since Friday. The new snow of the weekend is loosely bonded on west to north to east facing aspects above approximately 1500 m. Snow depths vary greatly, depending on the infuence of the wind. The snowpack remains subject to considerable local variations over a wide area. In all regions thus far only a little snow is lying.
