Avalanche Activity

Wind and new snow: The avalanche danger will already exist in the early morning. Backcountry touring and other off-piste activities call for restraint.

As a consequence of new snow and a moderate wind from westerly directions, sometimes avalanche prone wind slabs will form in the course of the day adjacent to ridgelines and in pass areas as well as at high altitude. These can be released, even by a single winter sport participant, in particular on very steep slopes. Such avalanche prone locations are to be found in particular in gullies and bowls, and behind abrupt changes in the terrain, caution is to be exercised in particular on very steep slopes at transitions from a shallow to a deep snowpack. As a consequence of warming during the day and solar radiation a large number of dry and moist avalanches are to be expected in the afternoon, even medium-sized ones.

Snowpack Structure

In some localities 10 to 15 cm of snow, but less in some localities, fell in the last few days. In particular along the border with France 15 to 30 cm of snow, and even more in some localities, will fall on Thursday above approximately 1800 m. Up to 2000 m rain will fall in particular from the border to France to Valais. Distinct weak layers exist in the bottom section of the old snowpack in all aspects. In all aspects snow depths vary greatly above approximately 2000 m, depending on the infuence of the wind. Adjacent to ridgelines and in pass areas and at high altitudes and in high Alpine regions a little snow is lying.

Tendency

Slight increase in danger of moist avalanches as a consequence of warming during the day and solar radiation.
