Avalanche Activity

TO for 6/2. Windslab developing and gaining depth on NE to SE above 750m. Also N and S and lower elevations. Considerable hazard.

Forecast Snow Stability: Windslab will continue to develop and gain depth in wind sheltered locations, such as gullies, corrie rims and ridge flanks. Greatest accumulations will be on North-East to South-East aspects above 750 metres with more localised accumulations at lower elevations. North and South aspects above 750 metres will also be affected due to cross loading. Cornices will develop above all of these aspects. Windward slopes will generally be scoured and stable. The avalanche hazard will be Considerable.

Snowpack Structure

Forecast Weather Influences: Constant showers throughout the forecast period will fall as snow at most levels. The freezing level will be around 300 metres. Very strong Westerly winds. Observed Weather Influences: Constant heavy precipitation in the morning fell as rain at most levels. Showers followed gradually turning to snow above 300 metres. The freezing level was around summit level in the morning lowering to around 300 metres by the end of the afternoon. Very strong Westerly winds. ObservedSnowStability: Fresh unstable windslab has started to develop in wind sheltered locations such as corrie rims and gullies, with North-East to South-East aspects above 750 metres most affected. Isolated deposits of windslab are also developing on North and South aspects due to cross loading. Elsewhere the existing snowpack is thawing and consolidating. The avalanche hazard is Moderate.
