Avalanche danger will remain at LOW for Saturday. Avalanche danger could increase today if snowfall amounts exceed expectations by later this afternoon. Anticipate changing conditions and monitor for signs of fresh instability.

Another quick change in weather and snow conditions is expected for Saturday. Following a warm and mostly calm spring day yesterday, a quick moving storm system is arriving today. Cooler temperatures, increasing winds, and cloudy skies will likely lock up snow surfaces, particularly at upper elevations, and keep avalanche danger at LOW. When the snow and accompanying strong winds arrive, avalanche danger could increase if snowfall amounts exceed expectations by later this afternoon.

There looks to be a spread in possible snowfall amounts throughout the area again, with some zones and elevation bands forecast to receive just a trace, while areas near the Sierra Crest could see close to a foot of new snow by Sunday morning. Watch for blowing snow forming drifts and fresh wind slabs, and signs of in-storm instabilities when the snowfall intensifies later.

Until snowfall arrives, use normal caution in avalanche terrain by watching for signs of lingering instability from previously strong winds and yesterday’s warm temperatures.

Travel conditions will be challenging today given yesterday’s melt and subsequent re-freeze overnight. Tools for climbing firm or icy slopes like ski and boot crampons are recommended. To arrest a slip or fall a whippet or ice-ax may be necessary too.
