Triggering an avalanche is possible where the wind has formed snowdrifts at middle and upper elevations. Watch out for areas of smooth, wind-drifted snow that could avalanche from the weight of a single person. To reduce the odds of triggering an avalanche, travel on hard snow surfaces and avoid areas of softer wind drifted snow.

    Watch out for new wind slabs 1-2 feet thick, primarily in east facing ravines. With 3 + inches of new snow this morning combined with strong northwest wind, look for the largest wind slabs to be found on east and southeast facing slopes. Smaller, thinner slabs may also be found on adjacent slopes from cross loading winds. 

    These slabs are very recently formed and despite the strong wind speeds, they are likely to be reactive to triggers in wind protected areas.   

    Watch out for areas of softer, dry snow where foot penetration goes deeper than the tops of your boots. Look for shooting cracks in the snow under your feet as a red flag for instability. 

    These new slabs may be formed atop existing thin wind slabs poorly bonded to the bed surface. This will most likely only be a problem on shady aspect slopes which avoided yesterday’s sun. A small D1 avalanche was triggered yesterday on one of these existing small slabs.

    Two skier-triggered avalanches were observed in Sluice. Both were windslab avalanches with crown depth varying from 3-12", with the larger slide being D1, R3 and the smaller being D1, R1.5. 

Avalanche Discussion

Today is a return to winter for the forecast zone. Expect cold temperatures and poor visibility. Blowing snow will challenge visibility to identify new wind slabs high in the terrain.

The Lion Head Summer Trail is CLOSED due to increased avalanche hazard. The Lion Head Winter Route is OPEN and the most direct route to the Mount Washington Summit from Pinkham Notch.
