In sintesi

While the avalanche danger is low, isolated pockets of wet loose snow may be present. Higher-elevation snow has stayed firm due to recent cold temperatures, cloud cover, and high wind speeds. Surface instabilities may be found at lower elevations were a hard refreeze may not have occurred.  Any rock formations that collect heat can affect surrounding snow and form surface instability as well.   Firm conditions bring their own hazards such as loosening and edge or fishtailing a sled that could result in a long sliding fall.

    An overnight refreeze and strong winds will continue to keep snow surfaces firm at higher elevations. Lower eleavtions may see enough warming and lack of re-freeze to create surface instability on steep slopes. Warmer temperatures and shelter from the wind may just be enough to create surface instability in isolated pockets. Although a potential avalanche will not be enough to bury a person it may be enough to push you off your intended course. Low danger does not mean no danger, continue to watch for changing conditions and take note of wet snow or roller balls forming as indicators that a wet loose avalanche may occur.

    Firm and fast conditions exist in the alpine, a long sliding fall could occur if you lose your footing, edge, or control of your sled. Bring the right equipment (crampons, ice axe, ski crampons) and evaluate the consequences if you were to lose purchase on a steep slope.

  • Sunday, April 21st will be the last forecast of the season.
  • The BWRA is open to motorized use until the last Saturday in April ( 4/27), or if there is less than 12 inches of snow at the Leavitt Lake/ 108 junction ( currently there is 60 inches).
  • Cal Trans has cleared the road past Leavitt Falls. Trucks can drive to the snowline. Trucks with trailers should not go past Brownie Creek trailhead as this is the last turnaround spot. As always park respectfully and out of the way of others.
