In sintesi

An incoming storm is bringing strong winds today that will stress weak snow deeper in the snowpack. It is possible to trigger an avalanche up to 4 feet in depth. Watch for signs of instability and be cautious of areas loaded by wind or terrain where the snowpack is thinner.

    Moderate winds are expected throughout the day with the potential for gusting over 50 mph. Wind slabs exist in upper elevations and new pockets may be formed by intensifying weather. There is the potential to be surprised by this hazard. As the winds increase and move more snow, slabs will become easier to trigger. Manage terrain carefully, watch for blowing snow, and pay attention to where it gets deposited.

    The weak snow at the base of the snowpack may be impacted by the wind and snow expected in the upcoming storm. Persistent slabs become easier to trigger as they experience loading. Steep, rocky, and wind-affected terrain continue to warrant caution as these avalanches are most likely to initiate where the snowpack is thinner. It is challenging to predict how persistent slabs will behave during storm cycles and the weight of a skier or rider can tip the scales. As weather changes over the next few days use caution and pick terrain carefully.

Avalanche Discussion

The weather is forecasted to change today as a winter storm approaches. Winds are expected to continue to move snow around and snow flurries are possible. Wet loose has been removed from the Togwotee forecast as more cloud cover is likely and temperatures are expected to be cooler. Continued caution may be warranted on solar slopes if there are periods of warm sun this afternoon.  Existing wind slabs will only get bigger today and new pockets may form. Mountain weather is dynamic and wind can deposit snow in surprising spots. Monitor snow surfaces carefully and pay attention to where snow is going.

Our persistent slab problem is still a problem. The weak snow at the bottom of the snowpack continues to have the potential to produce large avalanches and may become more reactive as the incoming storm adds stress.
