In sintesi

Recent snowfall is slowly gaining strength in the upper elevations. The snowpack is mostly stable but look out for a couple of lingering avalanche problems particularly where they sit on the old, hard snow surface. Wind slabs may still be reactive in isolated, steep, wind sheltered areas. Loose dry avalanches are also possible on sheltered aspects. These avalanche problems will most likely be located in terrain over 40 degrees and are more likely to be a hazard in consequential terrain with cliffs or terrain traps below you.

    Old wind slabs near and above 8,500ft are becoming harder to trigger and less likely. These may exist on multiple aspects due to changing wind direction. Smooth, fat pillows, loaded roll overs or vertical pillows on cross loaded slopes could be trigger locations for these slabs. If triggered, slab depth could be near a foot deep. Shooting cracks and stiff surface conditions are clues you have found a loaded pocket. Carefully evaluate potentially wind loaded terrain features and only expose one person at a time. Wind slab concerns may grow if snow totals exceed forecasted amounts.

Avalanche Discussion

Light snow flurries continue through the night with one to two inches being possible. This evening the temperature will remain cold near zero with west northwest winds averaging in the teens. Tomorrow will be partly cloudy and wind speed and direction will remain roughly the same as overnight. Expect another cold one as temperatures will stay in the single digits at mid and high elevations.Recent snowfall was fairly light density and easily transported by the wind which is continuing to build wind slabs in the upper elevations. Though not a widespread problem capable of producing large and destructive avalanches, these slabs require careful snow and terrain assessment in order to avoid trouble. The loose, dry avalanche problem is isolated to the aforementioned steep, sheltered terrain. Even small avalanches can still create big consequences if you are swept through terrain traps so choose your terrain carefully. The avalanche danger at upper elevations will remain Moderate and Low at all other elevations.
