Incremental snowfall during the last week has developed sensitive slabs that are resting above buried surface hoar, facets, and a firm crust. Reports of audible collapses and propagating snowpack test have occurred in areas with up to a foot of recent snowfall, indicating that the slabs are untrustworthy and ripe for human triggering. In areas that have been favored by the past week's snowfall, the volume of snow above the weak layer is now at the point of creating dangerous avalanches that are large enough to bury, injure, or kill a person.
Buried surface hoar is a notoriously delicate and dangerous weak layer. The resulting avalanches have the potential to propagate very quickly and often wider than one would expect. And it is common to see associated avalanches triggered on steep slopes remotely from adjacent terrain features like ridgelines or flat runouts. Avoiding slopes steeper than 30 degrees and giving yourself very wide margins regarding any steep terrain above you are the best ways to safely manage this problem and reduce the risk of being involved in a dangerous slide.

We observed propagating failures with 15 taps below the recent snowfall in a layer of 6 to 10 mm surface hoar. This was on an east-northeast aspect around 6,300 feet. Selkirk Mountains. February 3, 2026.
