If you read the avalanche forecast regularly, you will notice that this problem and location doesn't look like what you are used to seeing. The latest storm snow came in accompanied by relatively light winds from the West. On Monday, the snow was much less wind effected than I am used to seeing. Wind loaded pockets were neither as deep nor as hard as I am used to seeing. That being said, avalanches that I observed were mostly located on lee slopes beneath ridgelines. Are they Wind Slabs? Storm Slabs? Does it matter?
The takeaway is to be cautious in the usual spots (north and east slopes beneath ridgelines), but that some of our usual assessment tools like probing to see how loaded a slope is, may not be adequate by themselves. I checked out the avalanche on Moon Mountain and also some test slopes near by. All of the avalanches I observed failed within the new storm snow.
I am not ready to forget about the facets on sheltered north slopes that I spent all of January skiing. Likely most of them were drenched by the rain Saturday night, and perhaps that has taken the "sting" out of them. Avalanches are still possible on isolated slopes that are shady and sheltered lower in the terrain. This is why I have shaded north slopes below treeline. Test slopes, and compression tests will be useful before committing to very steep slopes (aren't they always).
