In sintesi

 New snowfall today will build sensitive slabs on weak, older snow surfaces. These will be the largest and most hazardous where pockets of dense, wind-drifted snow exist in wind-exposed terrain & may increase in size and distribution as you move up in elevation. Watch for signs of instability, such as cracking and collapsing. If venturing into the mountains today, be prepared to significantly scale back your terrain choices as today's snowfall stacks up.

    Any fresh and wind-drifted snow will build on very weak snow surfaces formed by our prolonged dry weather.  Sensitive conditions are most likely in areas that will receive more than 5 inches of snow by the end of the day today. Storm slabs may behave unpredictably.  They can break wider than you expect or be triggered from above, below, or next to a slope.  With limited observations and untested weak snow across the zones, answering the question of what will tip the bar towards greater instability (and if it's been tipped) is difficult. But we do know this: as snow piles up today, we'll need to take an increasingly cautious approach to backcountry travel. 

Avalanche Discussion

Avalanche Danger is directly driven by current and past weather. We have been in an extended period of Low danger in our forecast area, but that is changing. If you are traveling in our northern areas and you are finding significantly more new snow than forecast, you'll be well-served to dial back your ambitions for the day. Monitor how much snow is falling and how the new snow is behaving. Watch for how much snow is being transported by the wind and where it is depositing it. 

When conditions are changing, things can tip the scales quickly. Continue practicing good habits and communicate with your partners and any other parties if you are entering the backcountry today. Pay attention to changing conditions and be aware of the terrain you choose to enter and the consequences of an avalanche in that terrain.
