In sintesi

Strong northerly winds blew in last night averaging in the 50 mph range for several hours. This could make it easy for a person to trigger an avalanche in windblown snow up to 2' deep. In wind sheltered areas, dry loose avalanches could have serious consequences if they carry you into rocks or over a cliff. Finally, there is still a small chance a person could trigger a very large avalanche on weak snow buried up to 4' deep. All of today's problems primarily exist above 2,500' and can be avoided by choosing low angle or simple terrain.

    Recent Avalanches: January 29 was the last day an avalanche was reported in Summit Lake that was large enough to bury a person.

    It is hard to say where the snow landed (if it landed at all) when the wind is blowing as strong as it did in Summit Lake last night. Although they calmed early this morning, strong northerly winds are forecast to pick back up again this afternoon. The safest thing today is to stick to lower elevation terrain and enjoy some riding in the treeline elevation band. With winds this strong, there could be wind slabs at any elevation in exposed areas, although they should be smaller at lower elevations. Feel for firm snow over softer snow and watch for a shooting crack, which is a clear sign the snow needs time to stabilize. 

    Dry Loose Avalanches: The snow has remained cold for several days and dry loose avalanches could still occur in steep terrain. The wind today should keep the snow cool, but the sun is forecast to shine, which can trigger this type of avalanche naturally. Dry loose avalanches can sweep us off our feet in take us into dangerous places.

    The persistent slab problem in Summit Lake is only a problem above 2,500' and is stubborn at this point, which means it is taking more force (more taps) to get it to fail in snowpit tests. This is encouraging and stability is moving in the right direction. However, when the weak layer fails, it is propogating across the column. This tells us that if a person finds a thin spot, which exist near ridgelines and other wind scoured places, a very large avalanche could still be triggered. With strong winds forecast in the alpine today, the safest thing is to stick to lower elevation terrain to avoid both of these problems.
