Central Sierra Nevada

Avalanches remain unlikely throughout the forecast region.   Variable snow conditions exist in the backcountry with a mix of snow surface types.  Make a plan with options and change plans if you encounter unstable snow or unwanted conditions.

Expect and plan for encountering variable snow surface conditions if travelling in the backcountry today.  Factor in options and adjust plans if conditions are unexpected or are in poor condition.  Travel could be challenging in some areas due to these current snow conditions.

Snow surfaces range due to exposure to the sun and wind.  Melt freeze conditions exist on southerly aspects with firm snow expected this morning, softening as daytime warming occurs.  Cold soft snow can be found on shaded slopes where near surface faceting is occurring.  These conditions are normally found on wind protected northerly aspects, but can also be found on many open shaded slopes.  A mix of more undesirable conditions can also be found including breakable crusts, firm rain crusts, and wind scoured surfaces.  Areas that have been heavily used with refrozen tracks and areas under refrozen tree drippings under dense tree cover can be especially poor. 

Snow coverage loss continues with more exposed dirt, rock, and obstacles becoming visible-mainly on sun exposed terrain.  South facing terrain has become more limited as many of these slopes have melted out.  Open water, creeks, and holes continue to exist in low lying areas.
