The danger rating is CONSIDERABLE in the higher terrain ESPECIALLY IN THE FAIRVIEW CANYON ZONE WHICH RECEIVED THE MOST SNOW.

Fresh deposits of wind drifted snow will still be sensitive today.

Avoid any steep terrain where there are fresh drifts and wind slabs of new snow.

    Fresh wind drifted snow is the biggest threat today. I'm unsure of the conditions because heavy snowfall, drifting snow and poor visibility forced me to abort my fieldwork plan on Wednesday. Here's what I do know:

    • The wind was drifting A LOT OF SNOW.
    • Fresh wind drifts and wind slabs are the most sensitive when they are forming and directly after they form. They formed yesterday but will still be somewhat sensitive today.
    • Fresh wind drifts and wind slabs stabilize fairly quickly. Give them a day or two and they probably won't release as an avalanche any longer.
    • For today, it's wise to avoid any steep slopes that have wind drifts or wind slabs on them.

Snow and Weather

Current Conditions: Another 5 to 6 inches of snow trickled in over the last 24 hours bringing storm totals to 12" since Tuesday. However, snowfall in the Fairview Canyon zone really lit up on Wednesday and storm totals are an even two feet since Tuesday. THE WIND WAS STRONG ON WEDNESDAY from the northwest. This was drifting a lot of snow. It has slowed dramatically and is light from the southwest this morning. Temperatures are right about 0˚F this morning.

Mountain Weather: Today's weather will be cold, cloudy, and a chance for snow late afternoon. Temperatures will get into the low teens. Snowfall late afternoon and this evening might bring 2 to 4 more inches of snow. Southwest wind should remain pretty light but might pick up in speed a bit as the day goes on. We should see some partial clearing on Friday and Saturday. There will be more chances for snow Sunday and next week.
