In sintesi

Winds and a soft freeze overnight will prolong surface stability this morning a bit longer than we've been seeing this week.  Watch for possible unstable snow on solar aspects in steep terrain near midday and in the afternoon if the clouds break. Wet snow surface instabilities are still possible in steep-rocky lower elevation and wind protected terrain today.

    Over the past 36 hours significant winds have blown across our region, with very little to no snow transport.  It has decreased overall snow surface temperatures and slowed down the snowpack melt that has been occuring both day and night with poor refreeze at night.  Although most areas still didn't experience a solid refreeze last night, it was the coldest night we've had in over a week in most snotel locations in our region, with temperatures just under the freezing mark early this morning.

    With that, wet loose snow instabilities are still a concern in lower elevation terrain and in protected treed zones at all aspects, but mostly on southern solar aspects today.  Today winds combined with cloudy skies will combat the snow surface melt, but poor refreezes over the past week keep the surface snow manky and not producing the prime melt/freeze corn snow we've been hoping for.

    Early in the day, travel will be the safest with lower ski snow penetration expected.  If and when the day heats up, travel on steeper solar slopes should be limited.  Steer clear from traveling under and around rocky terrain overhead, as rockfall remains a possibility with these warmer daytime temperatures.

     

Avalanche Discussion

  • Last weekend a small (D2-) wet slab avalanche was spotted in our region along the 395 corridor on a north facing slope through the Devils Gate pass. This small slab avalanche was in shallow snow less than 2' and broke on old snow/ground interface. 
  • High and north facing protected terrain still may holding cold chalky snow in isolated pockets, as well as firmer snow lacking boot penetration.  A sharps kit may be useful in these cases.
