Watch for pockets of unstable snow in wind affected terrain. New snow formed shallow drifts in wind affected areas. Look for pillowy drifts of snow, and if you see cracking around your skis on a steep slope, retreat and find a lower angle route.

    The Salt and Wyoming Ranges have received between 0 to 4 inches of snow in the last 24 hours, with the northern mountains receiving the higher end of this amount. This was accompanied by westerly winds that formed fresh slabs on leeward slopes up to 6 inches deep. Decreased wind speeds overnight, cold temperatures, and the generally stubborn nature of these slabs have decreased the likelihood of triggering a slide, but it is still something to keep on your radar in steep terrain that has been wind affected. Remember even a small avalanche can be consequential in the wrong terrain.

Avalanche Discussion

Yesterday's weather did not produce a whole lot of snow, but some favored areas in the northern part of the forecast region did see a slight improvement in travel conditions. Tomorrow looks like it could produce a better shot of snow for the region. These small low pressure weather waves we are getting are a bit erratic, so we have to wait and see what happens. Regardless, it looks like active weather should continue throughout the week.

The reason I mention the incoming weather is that avalanche danger will rise again. After such a long period of low danger and go wherever you want conditions, it can be hard to shift back to a mindset where avalanches are a real possibility and terrain selection being important for more than just ride quality. Pay attention to the weather and read the forecast daily to stay up to date with what is going on.
