In sintesi

Recent snowfall and a chilly north wind have created wind slabs near and above the treeline. Watch for blowing snow and avoid areas where the snow drifts form. Take notice of the snow quality underfoot and remove yourself from a hazardous situation by continually assessing the slopes and watching for signs of instability. Very cold temperatures will bring additional concerns today, -12F at People's gate this morning and -29F in Bridgeport!

    Winds are continuing out of the North/North East above mid-slope elevations.  Yesterday, blowing snow was visible from 395. If traveling in or around the alpine stay heads up for wind-loaded slopes on all aspects near and above the tree line. Northerly winds have continued to transport snow and create wind slabs within the landscape. Be mindful of areas where wind slabs form such as gullies, just below ridgelines,  and near mid-slope features. The North wind is opposite of our usual prevailing SW wind. Don't be caught off guard, wind slabs may exist in some unexpected places today. Continually assess the snow and feel for instability with your skis, sleds, and ski poles. Look for "upside-down" feeling snow, smooth wind pillows, blowing snow and any signs of recent avalanches

    With temperatures remaining cold and snow shelter from the wind in the trees. Soft snow remains in place below the treeline. in isolated areas on steep slopes, this unconsolidated snow may slide and bring with it a consequential fall. Avoid the ramifications of a small slide by choosing to recreate on slopes with minimal hazards below. Avoid dry loose avalanche problems by inspecting the slopes for unconsolidated loose snow that has not bonded yet to the old snow, give the snowpack time to bond.

Avalanche Discussion

The inside slider system last Sunday brought 6 inches of new snow to the Leavitt Lake SNOTEL. With these inside slider-type systems, cold temperatures with an N, NE wind will accompany them.  Since Sunday, that is exactly what we have experienced. A moderate N and NE wind and morning temperatures in the single digits at the BWRA SNOTEL sites. Today that pattern will continue, so bundle up and be mindful that the most recent storm arrived in a different manner than the typical storms we receive from the Pacific.
