Slabs of wind drifted snow are scattered amongst rocks, ice, and vegetation with irregular fashion on the steep slopes of the mid and upper elevations. North and west winds have sculpted and redistributed the snow from last week onto slopes facing south and east in much of the range. Many of these slabs will appear smooth and rounded, with a brittle quality and a hollow sound as you approach them. If you can penetrate above your boot-tops or you see cracks radiate from your footsteps while climbing in steep terrain, you should likely readjust your trajectory and reevaluate because you may have found a problematic wind-blown slab.
