In sintesi

It is possible to trigger a 1-2 feet deep wind slab avalanche on mainly Northern and Eastern aspects above 7,000 feet. 

Use extra caution with your travel protocols near cornices and steep leeward terrain. 

If you are seeing signs like cracking or collapsing, find a lower angle slope to travel on.

    Winds blew mostly out of the South-Southwest over the last few days and have pushed snow into leeward terrrain. Monday we witnessed fresh loose dry debris as well as a few wind slab avalanches large enough to bury a person in a couple of spots. Gusts were recorded into the 20s Monday out of the North.

    Most wind slab problems can be found on Northern and Eastern aspects, but keep an eye out for other loading patterns where you are at. Look for clues as to which way the wind patterns have pushed the snow with the influence of the terrain you are in. Extereme, steep, and rocky upper elevation exposed and corniced slopes are going to have the highest potential of holding a slab that may vary in depth and sensitivity.

    The winds have started to settle down over the last 24 hours and the wind has remained relatively light out of the NE. Use extra caution if not avoidance of cornices and steep wind loaded terrain. Triggering may be easiest near rocks and trees where the slab is thin.

Our wind slab problem may stabilize over the next few days of warming and cooling yet the mountains won’t be totally free danger. Warm Sun may break loose snow on steep South and rocky slopes which will likely remain small yet worth thinking about triggering and natural wet loose avalanches if you are traveling through or under such terrain. 

We still have positive extended column test results in our pits 2 feet below the snow surface on fragments of buried surface hoar in the far Southwest part of our advisory area. This problem has become very unlikely, hard to trigger, and gone away naturally in most steep terrain yet recognize and respect that there may still be hang fire, re-loads, or outliers which should drive us to conservative choices and travel practices to broaden our margin of safety. 

Ease into steep terrain as the next few days warm and cornices and upper elevation slopes see Sun and heat. Cornices have grown to some impressive overhanging mammoths in some areas so give them room to break off and stay away from the overhanging edges.
