In sintesi

Avalanche danger will rise as the storm progresses. Triggering a large slab avalanche will be likely in wind deposited snow near and above treeline on north, east, and south facing slopes. Triggering an avalanche in wind sheltered areas will be possible in the new storm snow. Evaluate slopes for windloading, and if you see signs of unstable snow such as cracking in the surface snow, previous avalanches, or have doubts about the stability, increase your safety margin by moving to lower angle options less than 30 degrees steep.

    With strong to extreme winds in the forecast, the wind slab problem can take on a new form of complexity. By that I mean it will be more difficult to predict where wind slabs form. Often times with these high wind speeds, the blowing snow blasts into the sky and does not deposit in the normal places we usually expect wind slabs to build. Wind slabs may form below ridges and peaks and/or farther down slope than usual. There will likely be some cross loading as wind moves snow across terrain and whole mountain sides. On isolated terrain features wind slabs have the chance to produce larger avalanches than we are accustomed to with our typical storms. 

    Although less likely, this is the time to watch for wind slabs building in clearings below treeline or in forested terrain where the trees are widely spaced. Wind slabs below treeline will be patchy, isolated, and on the smaller side but will be something to watch for. Also remember there can be lee terrain on the windward side of a mountain. 

    The wind slab problem will build throughout the day. Monitor the depth of wind transported snow. As wind deposits become deeper, wind slab avalanches can become larger.

    This problem will depend on how much snow accumulates and the temperature profile of the storm. As the temperature rises in the afternoon, new snow will become slightly heavier and more dense making triggering a slab avalanche more likely. As the snow accumulation reaches the 8-10" mark or deeper, storm slabs will have the tendency to pack a punch especially in steep terrain and above terrain traps. Storm slabs are more likely to trigger in steep or rolling convex terrain, or where slopes are unsupported from below.

Anytime you have doubt in the stability of the new storm snow and wind deposited snow, stick to slopes less than 30 degrees steep and enjoy the ride.
