In sintesi

The avalanche danger will increase from Low this morning to Moderate in the afternoon as snow surfaces are weakened by warm temperatures and direct sunlight. The likelihood of human triggered or natural wet avalanche activity will increase as this weakening occurs. Avoid being in or under steep, sunny avalanche terrain during the afternoon. Cornices will also weaken this afternoon and should be given a wide margin.

    Warm temperatures, clear skies, and calm winds will destabilize snow surfaces by the afternoon. Refrozen snow surfaces will weaken quicker today than they have in the previous days. Human triggered, or natural, wet loose avalanches will be possible in very steep, sunny terrain later in the day. Wet snow avalanches will generally be on the smaller side, but some could entrain enough snow to bury or injure a person.

    Monitor the snow surface as the day warms. Sinking deeply into wet, slushy snow is a good indicator that conditions are becoming unstable and it is time to move away from steep terrain. An early start and exit from the mountains is the best way to manage wet snow problems today.

Avalanche Discussion

A warming trend is expected to continue today. Overnight low temperatures dipped below freezing by a few degrees in many locations. The upper portion of the snowpack likely experienced a decent refreeze given the clear conditions, however, expect refrozen surfaces to soften quicker than they have during the past several days. Daytime temperatures are expected to be about 10 degrees warmer than they were yesterday. Loose avalanches involving wet snow near the surface will be the primary concern today. Solid overnight freezes over the past several days should keep any wet slab concerns in check. 

Timing the transition from hard refrozen snow to snow that is just beginning to soften will be the key to good riding with stable conditions. Avoid lingering under very steep and rocky avalanche paths late in the day and continue to give cornices a wide berth as they will be more likely to fail in the heat of the day.

 

Human Factor 2.0 Backcountry Recreation Survey: For years, the avalanche community has worked to understand and address the human factors that influence decision-making in the backcountry.  A current project involves interviewing backcountry recreationalists traveling in avalanche terrain for at least one season.
