In sintesi

Conditions remain dangerous. Avalanches are most likely at upper elevations where winds have transported snow. Deeper avalanches are possible and could be triggered remotely—from flat terrain below, above, and to the sides of steep slopes. Safer conditions - and the best riding - can be found on slopes less than 30° and sheltered from the wind.

    Today, 6-12 inches of new snow and moderate winds from the NW will form wind slabs 1-2 feet thick at upper elevations on all aspects. Expect to find this problem along ridgelines and in cross-loaded areas such as gullies. These avalanches could step down into deeper buried weak layers creating larger avalanches. Watch for obvious signs of instability such as cracking or collapsing. Steer clear of areas where winds have created fresh drifts, pillows, cornices, or stiffened snow surfaces. Move to more sheltered terrain if you encounter signs of wind-affected snow.

    Weak layers of faceted snow are now buried 2-4 feet deep. While these layers are trending less reactive, it remains possible to trigger a large avalanche - particularly in areas with a shallower snowpack. Terrain features near cliffs, rocky slopes, or previously wind-affected terrain often harbor a shallower snowpack and should remain suspect. It has been 5 days since the last known avalanche failed on this layer in the neighboring Snake River Zone.

    These avalanches may not show signs of instability and can be triggered remotely from above, below, or adjacent to slopes over 30°. Tracks on a slope do not indicate stable conditions. Minimize your risk by traveling one at a time on steep terrain, and identifying features that harbor a shallower snowpack. You can remove the uncertainty of this problem by sticking to slopes under 30°.

Avalanche Discussion

There is a lot of good riding to be had in the Salt and Wyoming Ranges right now. Slopes that are less than 30° and not blown around by the wind will provide great powder riding and the smallest chance of triggering an avalanche. Persistent weak layers like the faceted, weak, sugary snow at the base of the snowpack take time to adjust. Be patient as this happens. Avoid terrain traps like creek beds and road cuts with steep slopes above.
