Dangerous avalanche conditions exist on steep, wind loaded slopes in the upper elevations where stress has been added to buried weak layers. Watch for obvious signs of unstable snow such as cracking or collapsing. Large and consequential avalanches are most likely to trigger on steep, shaded aspects that harbor the deepest and weakest snow.

    Weak layers formed in November are buried 2-3 feet deep beneath hard slabs. An avalanche was triggered yesterday on Barber’s Point on very steep, north facing terrain previously wind loaded that highlights where this problem is most likely. These avalanches are also possible across all upper elevation aspects and shaded middle elevations. Remote triggering from gentle terrain above, below, or beside steep slopes is less likely, but still possible. 

    Be aware that triggering a large avalanche with low snow coverage increases the consequences of exposing rocks and hazardous obstacles.

    Strong, westerly wind combined with recent snow has formed firm wind slabs around a foot deep in upper elevations. These wind slabs are most likely on open and exposed terrain to the wind above 9,000’ off leeward ridgelines. Wind slab could also exist in unusual locations, such as cross-loaded slopes and gullies, due to the high intensity of the wind. As mentioned above, these wind slabs could step down to buried weak layers to trigger larger avalanches.

    Here is a great example of a small wind loaded test slope to determine the reactivity of recent snow. 

Avalanche Discussion

Positive feedback from recent avalanches and widespread collapsing is clear indications of an unstable snowpack. Multiple observations yesterday reported red flag avalanche conditions present. The snowpack structure on Togwotee is poor due to weak, faceted snow formed in November that is now buried by hard slabs. The snowpack has undergone serious changes over the last several weeks with substantial loading. Despite the low snow depths from the most recent storm, the snow was dense and rapidly transported by strong westerly wind. Your hackles should raise anytime a poor snowpack is undergoing rapid or incremental changes. Stay diligent to identify wind loaded slopes today where both avalanche problems line up and are most obvious.
