Snowpack

In the north, the snowpack is quite favourable. Avalanches may only be triggered very occasionally and mainly in near-surface layers. In southern Valais, Ticino and Grisons, there are faceted layers deeper in the snowpack. A few avalanches have been triggered in the old snowpack in recent days, especially from the Davos region via the Engadine to Val Müstair, and occasionally also on the Main Alpine Ridge in Valais.

The snow is also becoming increasingly moist higher up and on shady slopes. On southern slopes, the snowpack is water-saturated up into the high Alpine regions, while on eastern and western slopes the majority is water-saturated up to around 2600 m. North-facing slopes are water-saturated to around 1800 m, with the surface moist up to around 2400 m. In areas with weak snow layering, moist slab avalanches can be triggered by people in some places.

A strong melt-freeze crust will form during the night into Tuesday. As daytime temperatures rise in the sunshine, this will soften as the day progresses and the risk of wet and gliding avalanches will increase.

The night into Wednesday will be only partly clear in the west and south, otherwise mostly clear. During the day, it will be mostly sunny with some banks of cloud. Isolated showers may be possible in the west. The zero-degree level will be around 2200 m. The wind will be mostly light from northerly directions.

The night into Thursday will be mostly clear, and it will be sunny during the day. The zero-degree level will be between 2500 m in the west and 2100 m in the east. There will be a mostly moderate wind from northerly directions.

The danger of dry avalanches will decrease on both days, but only slowly in the areas with weakly bonded old snow. The danger of wet and gliding avalanches will increase during the day. Tours and hut ascents should be completed in good time.
