The general avalanche hazard is CONSIDERABLE above an elevation of 7,500 feet and MODERATE below 7,500 feet. On Tuesday, a snowmobiler narrowly missed being buried in a terrain trap after remotely triggering a slab avalanche on a steep slope in the Maverick Creek Drainage. Similar events are possible today. Large unstable slabs, which lie upon a persistent weak layer, could be triggered by backcountry travelers on a variety of aspects. Expert knowledge and conservation slope choices are essential for safe travel in avalanche terrain today.

    Large persistent slabs could be human triggered on a variety of aspects. Above 7,500 feet, these slabs could have crown depths up to five feet deep. Below 7,500 feet, these slabs could have crown depths up to two feet deep. These slabs have been triggered in areas where thick deposits of wind-drifted snow have built up in avalanche starting zones. Shallow weak-spots in these slabs should be considered likely trigger points, and previous tracks on a slope should not be mistaken as an indication of stability.

Overnight lows in the mountains will be near 10 before rising into the low 20s during the day. Northeasterly ridgetop winds will range from 10 to 20 miles per hour.The general avalanche hazard is expected to be CONSIDERABLE in the Greys River and Togwotee Pass areas on Thursday. Backcountry travelers are likely to trigger dense slabs two to five feet in depth on a variety of aspects. In the Tetons, the general avalanche hazard is expected to be MODERATE. Similar slides are possible and could be triggered in isolated areas. In all forecast areas, the consequences of being caught in one of these slides remain high and previous tracks are not an indication of stability.
