At the mid and upper elevations the snowpack is mostly stable, however warm temperatures will increase the avalanche hazard after snow surfaces soften. The 5 AM air temperatures are near freezing and snow surfaces are expected to soften early. Wet slides are possible during the warmest portion of the day and pose a hazard to people who venture onto to very steep slopes and into cliff areas. Limited snow exist below an elevation of 7,000 feet.
Avalanche Discussion
Cooler air will continue to move into the region overnight as a cold front continues its southward progression. Skies on Sunday are expected to be partly to mostly cloudy with a chance of snow showers along the Continental Divide. Temperatures are expected to drop to near 20 degrees by daybreak and rise into the 30s and 40s during the day. Winds will be northwest at 10 to 20 miles per hour. The snowpack is mostly stable, however warm temperatures and areas of sunshine will increase the wet snow avalanche hazard after snow surfaces soften. Wet slides are possible during the warmest portion of the day in steep terrain and cliff areas. The general avalanche hazard is expected to be LOW in the morning and could increase to MODERATE during the afternoon in areas where significant softening of the snow surfaces occurs.
