In sintesi

Sunlight and warm temperatures will weaken the surface of the snowpack today and increase the possibility of triggering existing surface slabs and the potential for wet slides to occur in steep terrain that experiences intense warming. The hazard is anticipated to rise from LOW to MODERATE at the upper elevations before noon and at the mid elevations around or afternoon. Monitor conditions and avoid steep terrain that is experiencing the intense effects of sun and warm temperatures.

At the upper elevations pockets of surface slab up to a foot in depth lie upon a persistent weak layer of surface hoar and light density snow. In some steep, wind loaded avalanche starting zones these slab are poorly bonded to hard old snow surfaces formed during an extended dry period in February and could be triggered by skiers and riders. Warming temperatures will increase the sensitivity of these slabs to human triggers.

Avalanche Discussion

Spring like conditions will continue as the center of a high pressure ridge slowly moves across the region. Skies will once again be clear on Monday. Temperatures will drop to near 18 degrees by morning and will warm into the 30s and 40s during the day. Winds will be light and variable. The avalanche hazard will be generally low during the morning hours and increase to moderate, due to the warm temperatures, in the afternoon. At the upper elevations pockets of surface slab up to 18 inches in depth could be human triggered in some steep wind loaded avalanche starting zones. A remote possibility may persist for deeper hard slabs to be triggered in isolated areas in the Togwotee Pass area. Wet snow slides will be a concern in steep terrain during the warmest portion of the day.
