Avalanche Summary

You can trigger a dangerous avalanche on slopes that face the northern half of the compass. The most dangerous slopes, where you are most likely to trigger an avalanche, are on northwest and north-facing slopes near and above treeline, where it is easier to impact the weak layer buried about 1 to 2 feet deep. Northeast and east-facing slopes are still dangerous, but you might be able to travel on them many times before finding the trigger point and bringing the whole slope down on you. Tracks on a slope don't mean the slope is safe. You can trigger these from a distance, so be aware of steep slopes above you.

Safer travel options exist on sunny, south-facing slopes. If these slopes start to get wet and your feet start sinking past your ankles, consider avoiding very steep terrain to avoid being caught in a loose avalanche.
