In sintesi
As very shallow new slabs begin to form on excellent sliding surfaces older slabs 2 to 4 feet in depth present a significant hazard at the mid and upper elevations. These older slabs lie upon weak layers of faceted snow and could be triggered by backcountry travellers and step to the ground. These older slabs are more likely to be triggered in areas with a shallow snowpack where the underlying faceted snow is well developed, around rock outcrops and in areas with recent wind deposits. Locations with deeper snowpack may be gaining strength but are still very weak. Deep slabs can be started on slopes which have been previously crossed by skiers or snowmobilers high or low on the avalanche path.
