Persistent weak layers

In some places the avalanches can be triggered in the faceted old snow and reach medium size in isolated cases. This applies especially in little used backcountry terrain. The avalanche prone locations are rather rare and are difficult to recognise. Older wind slabs can be released in isolated cases, especially at their margins, on very steep, little used shady slopes, caution is to be exercised in particular at transitions from a shallow to a deep snowpack, when entering gullies and bowls for example.
Less snow than usual is lying. Below approximately 2000 m hardly any snow is lying. The old snowpack will be well bonded on steep sunny slopes. Faceted weak layers exist in the snowpack on north, northeast and northwest facing slopes. The older wind slabs are to be found especially in gullies and bowls, and behind abrupt changes in the terrain. As a consequence of falling temperatures and solar radiation the snow drift accumulations stabilised during the last few days. In the last ten days hardly any more avalanches were reported.
The avalanche danger will persist.
