In sintesi

Generally safe avalanche conditions exist and large avalanches are unlikely. Be on the lookout for small, fresh wind drifts at mid-elevations. Being caught in even a small avalanche can have deadly consequences, especially with firm snow surfaces and exposed rocks, ice, and vegetation.

    Small fresh wind slabs of light low density snow may be found in steep east facing terrain. They are likely to be sensitive due to moderate wind speeds overnight and up to several inches thick. The new slabs will be soft and smooth.They will feel and look much different from the older slabs beneath. 

    Preexisting disconnected wind slabs can also be found across steep, wind-sheltered terrain. These firm slabs are variable in depth from 6 inches to 3 feet deep. They are stubborn to react to external load or force and do not have a tendency to propagate. Triggering one of these older slabs in steep terrain is unlikely, but not impossible if you find a weak spot over a rock or ice bulge. 

Avalanche Discussion

Today’s small wind slab avalanche problem formed after 1 - 2 inches of new light density snow fell on moderate west winds late yesterday afternoon. These wind slabs will be generally thin, they may even be hard to find, but have potential to be dangerous if found on steep hard snow. Getting tripped up or carried by a small avalanche could result in serious injuries with the current exposed rocks and trees in the bottom of most avalanche paths. 

The subsurface of the snowpack is a collection of wind slabs of varying densities, crusts from old rain events, and mid-storm precipitation changes from the most recent snowstorm on January 17th. On paper, these are weak layers and weak interfaces within the snowpack. However, in field tests they react to increased loads by producing inconsistent results with stubborn weak layer failures and chunky debris rather than propagation with smooth failure planes. Triggering one of these older slabs is not likely, but also not impossible. 

The Lion Head Summer Trail is now closed for the season due to avalanche risk. The Lion Head Winter Route is the preferred option to the summit.
