West Slopes North

Avalanche conditions are generally safe. Expect low danger to continue until more significant weather arrives. Challenging travel conditions and icy surfaces pose the greatest hazard.

Recent observations throughout the West North Zone indicate a strong and stable snowpack. Saturday will bring another cold, clear day with little change in conditions. Sunshine may soften southerly slopes, but in general, snow surfaces will remain firm and icy. Travel could be dangerous on steep slopes where even a small slip could result in a long uncontrolled fall. Expect variable conditions at lower elevations with downed trees, open creeks, and breakable crusts. Plan your route accordingly, and give yourself time and patience to deal with these non-avalanche hazards. 

No new avalanches were reported recently. Evidence of the significant storm and widespread avalanche cycle ending January 13 is still easy to find (Observation). The most recent snow from last weekend is wind and/or sun affected in most areas, and well bonded to the underlying crust. Shallow slabs of wind drifted snow linger in leeward alpine terrain, but appear unreactive to triggers. Although avalanches are unlikely, always gather information as you travel and pay attention to changing conditions with aspect and elevation. Remember that even a small avalanche could have high consequences in extreme terrain. 

During the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic, continue to follow the latest guidance from local, state, and federal health officials. Avoid unnecessary risks that could impact first responders and stress medical resources.  Wear a mask when appropriate, practice social distancing, and consider recreating closer to home.
