Avalanche Activity

TO for 03.01. Windslab instabilities and fragile cornices on W through N to NE aspects above 750m. Avalanche Hazard Moderate.

Forecast Snow Stability: Deposits of fresh and redistributed snow will form moderately bonded windslab on West through North to North-East aspects above 750 metres. These instabilities mainly affecting the tops of gullies, wind sheltered coire rims and ridge flanks. Cornices will be fragile on the same aspects. Wind exposed South-East and Southerly aspects will see some scouring perhaps exposing a hard icy crust with some softening expected later as the temperatures begins to rise. The avalanche hazard will be Moderate.

Snowpack Structure

Forecast Weather Influences: The strengthening Southerly winds will become gale force for a short period, then reduce in strength remaining Southerly then back South-East becoming fresh by the end of the period. There will be some light scattered showers mainly in the morning. The Freezing level will hover around the 600 metres then rise to 1400 metres later. Observed Weather Influences: It has been a dry day with some brighter periods, although clouds often obscured the summits. Winds have been moderate South-Westerly. The freezing level was around 400-500 metres. ObservedSnowStability: Weaknesses are persisting in the recently deposited windslab lying mainly on North through East to South-East aspects above 650 metres. These instabilities are localised and not extensive, affecting very steep wind sheltered terrain such as the tops of gullies and coire rims. Fragile cornices are present above these aspects. The old snowpack is refrozen and generally stable with some hard icy crust on wind exposed areas. The avalanche hazard is Moderate.
