Avalanche Activity

CM for 13.3 New unstable windslab mainly on South to West aspects above 800m. Also SE+NW. New fragile cornices. Haz Considerable

Forecast Snow Stability: During the evening some wet snow instabilities will be present on steep North-West through North to East aspects above 900 metres. These will diminish as the freezing level drops. From midnight onwards and throughout the day unstable windslab will be deposited in wind sheltered areas, mainly on South to West aspects above 800 metres. South-East and North-West aspects will also be affected. Fragile cornices will build above these aspects. The avalanche hazard will be Considerable.

Snowpack Structure

Forecast Weather Influences: Winds will initially be South-Westerly, then overnight will back and strengthen to strong to gale force East-North-Easterly and North-North-Easterly during the afternoon. The freezing level will initially be above the summits, then from midnight lower steadily to 200 metres by end of the afternoon. Snowfall from midnight onwards will fall to increasingly lower levels. Observed Weather Influences: Overnight snowfall down to the glens turned to rain at all levels by early morning as the freezing level rose above the summits. Winds were strong South-Westerly. ObservedSnowStability: Fresh unstable windslab was deposited in sheltered areas mainly on North-West through North to East aspects above 900 metres. During the day these accumulations became moist, as did the surface of the older snowpack. Wet snow instabilities are present on steep slopes on these aspects. Minor instabilities also persist in the older snowpack in shaded locations on the same aspects. The avalanche hazard is Moderate.
