Overnight winds and new snowfall will make human-triggered avalanches likely at upper elevations and possible at middle elevations. Avalanches will most likely occur on slopes where you encounter obvious signs of wind-drifted snow. Watch for active wind loading, drifts, and shooting cracks. Slab size and distribution may increase as a second storm impacts this afternoon. Evaluate exposed terrain carefully and consider the consequences of getting knocked off your feet.

    Overnight, the Tetons received up to 7" of new snow with predominately western winds of 20-30 mph. The combination of wind and snow has formed fresh slabs up to a foot thick. Human-triggered avalanches are likely in upper-elevation terrain where snowfall totals are greater. Smaller slabs may be found in isolated pockets of exposed terrain at middle elevations. Continued snowfall and winds throughout the day could increase the size and distribution of slabs. Wind slabs often form along ridgelines, below convexities, and on cross-loaded terrain features, such as gullies and couloirs. Watch for active drifting, pillows, and textured or stiffer snow surfaces. Shooting cracks from your skis or board means you've found unstable snow. If you see signs of instability, move to lower-angled slopes or wind-sheltered terrain.

Avalanche Discussion

Conditions can change quickly during the spring. Yesterday's warm weather has been replaced by winter.  Todays cooler temperatures, increasing winds and clouds should keep wet avalanche problems in check. Overnight snowfall up to 7" has impacted the forecast zones bringing light, low-density snowfall to the Tetons. With sustained winds through the day, this snow will be tossed around and create fresh wind slabs through the mountains at upper elevations. Snowfall and winds are expected to continue through the day, so slab size and distribution could increase as the day progresses. This will be especially true in the late afternoon as a second band of moisture and stronger winds impact the zone. It will be hard to predict how this new snow will bond to our snowpack. If it behaves anything like the previous storm (where we saw similar conditions and setup) small slabs could be fairly easy to trigger - especially on steeper terrain where crusts have formed. Enjoy the fresh snow and softer riding. More snow is on the way.
