In sintesi

Generally stable avalanche conditions exist across the majority of the region. Watch out for pockets of unstable snow on wind affected slopes above 9,000 feet. A larger avalanche failing in buried weak layers is unlikely. Travel one at a time on steep slopes and avoid terrain traps that could increase the consequences of a small slide.

    Weak snow formed in November sits at the base of our snowpack, buried 2 to 5 feet deep. It is unlikely that you would be able to trigger an avalanche on this layer in the vast majority of terrain, but it is something to keep on the radar. Thin, rocky, wind affected slopes that are very steep are where you could potentially impact this weak layer. Be cautious of slopes with these characteristics.

    This was the last reported persistent slab avalanche that resulted in a partial burial. 

Avalanche Discussion

Togwotee Pass has received minimal snowfall in the last two weeks, favored areas have received a measly 5 inches over the last 5 days. This extended period of minimal precipitation has allowed the snowpack to grow comfortable in its own skin and low avalanche hazard to prevail.

Although triggering a slide is unlikely, low danger doesn’t mean no danger, and I see two scenarios where an avalanche could be triggered:

  • Small wind slabs in isolated terrain. These slabs may exist at upper elevations on very steep leeward slopes in and around wind affected terrain. While a small wind slab might not be big enough to bury you, it could take you off your feet or sled and be dangerous in consequential terrain.
  • Larger persistent slab avalanche. This problem is described above under Persistent Slab. Although we haven’t seen an avalanche breaking on this layer since around the New Year, poor snowpack structure still exists. These avalanches can do weird things and surprise us. The best way to increase your margin of safety is to travel one at a time in avalanche terrain, keep eyes on your partners, and avoid terrain traps.
