In sintesi

LOW avalanche danger persists at all elevations. Variable & challenging surface conditions exist throughout the forecast area and remain the greatest hazard in the backcountry. Monitor for isolated areas of unstable snow today and be prepared for very hard and slick surfaces.

Avalanche Discussion

Our cold front continues today. Temperatures will stay well below freezing today, even at lower elevations, and winds are expected to ramp up out of the north with ridgetop gusts approaching 100 mph.  Be prepared for a brisk windchill if you head out into the mountains today.

These factors will work together to limit the potential for excessive solar warming today.  Some superficial warming may occur in isolated areas on southerly aspects however the risk of unstable snow is very low. More concerning for the backcountry enthusiast are the variable and challenging surface conditions that exist throughout the forecast area. Soft recycled powder can be found in some sheltered northerly terrain however a variety of surface crusts and expansive hard and slick surfaces can be found on all aspects and at all elevations. Be aware of your exposure to terrain hazards such as long steep slopes, cliff bands, tight rocky chokes, and stands of trees. Even an otherwise innocuous fall could easily lead to a perilous “slide for life” situation. Slow it down and remain vigilant if you find yourself in steep or consequential terrain. Equipment like boot and/or ski crampons and an ice ax may be critical even at lower elevations or in protected areas you may not typically expect to need them.
