In sintesi

Yet another sunny day means conditions will remain very similar to the previous day. Most wet avalanche activity has already happened, but there's still a tiny chance that a small wet avalanche could run on steep, south-facing terrain. Sunny slopes will be crusty and then soften midday, whereas snow in shadier terrain will remain dry and softer.

    Most avalanche activity probably occurred near the start of this high pressure system. There's still a very small chance that wet loose avalanches could run on steep, sunny slopes. They're most likely to occur in thinner areas over rock or bare ground. If you sink past your ankles into the snow or notice wet snow starting to roll downslope, transition to shadier aspects or lower angle terrain away from steep slopes. More easterly slopes will soften first before south midday and then more westerly in the early afternoon. 

     

    (12/2/2024) Steep sunny slopes with thin snow cover had wet loose avalanche activity closer to the start of this warm period in the West Central zone. 

Avalanche Discussion

Previously sun-affected slopes and lower elevations will start out crusty, but they will soften as the sun impacts them. Shady and lower angle aspects will remain cold, dry snow. You might find old and firmer wind-affected surfaces as you gain elevation. Snow surfaces are weakening in the shady areas due to the clear skies and daily temperature swings, and surface hoar has developed as well. 

We're approaching the shortest day of the year, and the sun is at a low angle. It hasn't done nearly as much damage to south-facing terrain as it would during similar conditions in April, where days are much longer and a lot more avalanche activity would result. One observer noted that they were surprised how cold and unaffected by the sun the snow was when they weren't on steep southerlies.

Our snowpack is surprisingly deep for this time of year, as snowlines start at just under 2500ft and are about 3 ft or deeper by 4000ft. We may have a great base, but beware the usual early season hazards like exposed creeks, trees and rocks at lower elevations.
