In sintesi

Human-triggered avalanches are possible on areas of smooth wind-drifted snow, with steep east-facing and south-facing slopes as the areas of greatest concern. To help avoid an avalanche, travel on hard, wind-scoured snow surfaces.

    Recently formed wind slabs remain in middle and upper elevations. Expect these slabs to be firm and stubborn to propagate low in the terrain, becoming softer and more reactive higher up on the slope. As the snow becomes softer moving up the slope, triggering a hard slab avalanche is increasingly possible. In areas where the snow is firm, wind-sculpted, or scoured, triggering an avalanche is unlikely.

    Areas of greatest concern include south and south east aspects where the recent slabs are 1 to 3 feet thick. Look for softer, smoother, more reactive snow in the middle and upper portions of gullies and steep slopes to identify areas of greatest concern.

    Less than 1 inch of new snow yesterday, a few hours of ice pellets this morning and the chance for a little more new snow today will likely build small, thin wind slabs which may mask the thicker slabs below.

Avalanche Discussion

Observers in the field yesterday found mainly hard stubborn slabs and wind sculpted snow in the lower areas of Tuckerman Ravine. Good stability was noted until around the 4500 foot elevation where softer, more reactive snow was found. Observers found the new slabs could fail on a density change mid-slab and also on the old melt freeze crust formed prior to this recent storm. Most slab failures were found on a thin facet layer above the melt freeze crust. Tread cautiously and carefully if you step out onto mid and upper elevation slabs. 

The Lion Head Summer Trail is CLOSED due to increased avalanche hazard. The Lion Head Winter Route is OPEN and the most direct route to the Mount Washington Summit from Pinkham Notch.
