In sintesi

The strong sun, warm temperatures, and calm winds are working together to create unstable surface snow in isolated pockets.  The precursor for wet avalanches are roller balls and pinwheels,  watch for them near cliff bands and exposed rocks that amplify the sun's effects.  The firm snowpack will warm throughout the day and may create loose wet instability on south-facing slopes in the afternoon.

    Surface instability from solar radiation can be found in isolated pockets in the afternoon on southerly aspects. Weather factors such as calm winds, clear skies, and high temperatures near 40F are producing late afternoon surface warming. These warm days on the final week of winter have resulted in point releases of wet unconsolidated snow. In the morning, slopes have been locked up from a hard overnight freeze providing a very firm and unforgiving snow surface, but in the afternoon we have seen small loose wet avalanches on Southerly aspects. Avalanche activity has specifically been seen near rocks, cliff bands, and other features that absorb the longwave radiation and intensify the effects of the sun.  Sings of instability included roller balls or pinwheels or if you experience a drastic change in boot/ ski pen as the day progresses. Finding shaded cold snow can be a simple way to remove yourself from he avalanche hazard today.

  • Surface conditions are variable in the BWRA. The rain event last week did a number on the snow quality.  Riding up 108 to the BWRA entrance was a slow process as sleds began to overheat quickly and it was difficult to break through the hard surface layers for us to chainsaw the snowmobiles and cool them off. Higher up, slopes are starting the day very firm, and fast, resulting in less than ideal riding conditions. The exception is that soft snow is lingering in some North facing trees and other shaded locations. soft snow is at a premium until the next storm system arrives early next week. 
  •  As snow removal resources are being utilized elsewhere in the county, the result is that parking continues to be limited on HWY 108.  The best parking options are at the main base entrance or before. A  cat track begins near gate 3 at MWTC.  As always, park respectfully so others can squeeze in and  MWTC can continue operations with heavy equipment.
