In sintesi

The avalanche danger will rise throughout the day as new snow and strong winds form sensitive slabs at the middle and upper elevations. Human triggered avalanches, large enough to injure a person, will become likely by the afternoon above 8,000’. Natural avalanche activity will also be possible in very steep, wind loaded terrain. Avoid being on, or under, steep wind loaded slopes today.

    Snow has just started to fall as of 5am. About a foot of dense new snow is expected in the upper elevations by evening. Winds are increasing out of the southwest/west and will be blowing in the 30s-40s mph by mid day. Fresh wind slabs up to 18 inches in depth will be easy to trigger by the afternoon. Slabs are forming on top of a slick crust in most locations and are not likely to bond well to this surface. Avalanches involving the new snow will run fast and far on this surface. Natural avalanches will be possible by afternoon in very steep, upper elevation terrain given the rapid loading rates expected this morning. 

    Middle elevations are starting with a rain/snow mix and should see lower snowfall totals given the warm temperatures. Slabs will be smaller, but still reactive in this elevation band. In addition, avalanches will be likely in steep terrain that is sheltered from the wind if the forecasted snow totals are correct.

    Weak layers of snow that formed in November are buried 2-4 feet deep beneath hard slabs. These slabs have been largely unreactive in recent days due to a strong upper snowpack and time for adjustment between layers. Loading from today’s snowfall and strong wind will stress the November weak layers more than they have been in about a week. While triggering is still on the low end of the likelihood scale, it is worth noting the increased stress, especially with more snow on the way. Very steep, rocky, and wind affected slopes in the upper elevations are most suspect. Keep in mind that a surface avalanche involving new snow is the best way to trigger deeper weak layers.

Avalanche Discussion

Last week’s warm and windy storm left a rain crust across all aspects/elevations up to at least 10,000’ in the Salt Rivers and Wyoming Ranges. This surface is well connected and very slick. Today’s snow is coming in heavy and fast with strong winds. Around a foot of new snow containing about an inch of water (SWE) is expected in a 12 hour period today. The combination of rapid loading on a very slick surface is a good recipe for sensitive and dangerous avalanche conditions. Evaluate new snowfall amounts carefully and expect avalanche activity in steep terrain if forecasted snow totals verify.
