Triggering an avalanche large enough to bury or injure you is possible in steep terrain today. Wind loaded slopes are most dangerous, but avalanches remain possible in steep terrain sheltered from the wind. Be conservative with your terrain choices around and under steep slopes.

    Weak snow that formed in November sits near the base of the snowpack in the majority of terrain above 8,500’. Loading from heavy snowfall and strong wind is stressing these weak layers, making them more likely to fail. Recent avalanches failing near the ground illustrate the nature of this problem. Avalanches in the upper portion of the snowpack also have the potential to step down to older weak layers and create very large avalanches. This is most likely to occur in very steep terrain that faces east through north. Wind loading will also increase the likelihood of this problem.

    Two recent human triggered avalanches have been reported involving weak snow near the ground. Both occurred in steep, treed terrain that is sheltered from the wind. No signs of instability were observed prior to these avalanches.

    Heavy snowfall and strong wind over the last week have created unstable conditions. Triggering a slab 1-4 feet deep in the recent snow is possible in wind loaded terrain at upper elevations today. Avalanches have the potential to break farther and wider than expected. Shooting cracks and audible collapses are clear signs of unstable conditions. However, these signs may not be present before triggering. Give all steep terrain a wide berth and be aware of steep slopes above you today.

Avalanche Discussion

A series of powerful storms has brought heavy snowfall and strong winds to the Togwotee area. Over the last week Togwotee has received 2-3 feet of new snow with up to 3 inches of Snow Water Equivalent. This is an impressive load in a short period of time. Both human triggered and natural avalanches have been reported in the past several days. Continue to give the snowpack time to adjust.
