Avalanche conditions are generally stable, and large avalanches are unlikely. Evaluate areas of wind drifted snow carefully, especially in steep consequential terrain. Travel on icy hard surfaces to reduce your chances of triggering an avalanche today.

    Between 4000 and 5500 feet, expect to find wind slabs that are variable in size and location. The most likely place to find a wind slab is on steep south west, south and south east aspects where steep terrain features provide ample protection from the wind. The largest wind slabs will be found on direct south aspects, up to 2 feet thick, generally small in area, and will feel firm underfoot. They will likely be too stiff to give any clear signs of instability as you travel, steering clear of convex rollovers and steep unsupported pillows of snow can help increase your margins of triggering a slide. 

    Identify the new slabs from the snowback bed surface using a ski pole or an ice axe. The old bed surface will be very firm, almost icy and you won’t easily push a ski pole through the surface. The new slabs are wind impacted and also firm, but an inverted ski pole can be pushed through the snow with a little force. Traveling on the old, crusty snow surface can greatly help to avoid the avalanche problem today.

Avalanche Discussion

Low avalanche danger does not mean no avalanche danger! Yesterday a group of skiers triggered a relatively small hard slab on a convex roll-over on a south facing slope in Oakes Gulf. No one was injured. They skied conservatively, using safe travel techniques and reported no warning signs to indicate instability. If this was above a terrain trap or in steep consequential terrain the outcome could have been different.  (OBS)

Regardless of Low avalanche danger, all of your standard safety protocols still apply. Continue to carry rescue gear, travel one at a time through avalanche terrain, and watch for signs of instability. Remember that small avalanches can have bad outcomes in steep consequential terrain. Before committing to skiing a slope, think about where an avalanche could carry you. Could you get pushed over cliffs or through trees? Slopes with these terrain traps are inherently more dangerous than open slopes with a clean runout.
